About Devin

I hold a Bachelor's degree in English and Communication and Rhetoric, and a Master's degree in Secondary Education English. In addition, I have ten years experience in education as a certified ELA teacher and over fifteen years experience as a writing tutor. I have worked with students ranging from middle school all the way through college in a variety of subject areas, including English language arts, history, psychology, sociology, communication, business administration, nursing, and SAT/ACT test prep. While I may not be an expert in all subject areas, my objective as a writing tutor is to help students articulate their thoughts in a cogent and organized manner that addresses a writing prompt or assignment, while guiding them through the writing process. In doing so, I provide students with the tools and strategies to help them excel in all classes where they are expected to complete writing assignments.

About the lesson

My career as a tutor started over twenty years ago when I was trained as a writing tutor and worked with undergraduate and graduate students at my university's writing center. It was here that I discovered my love and passion for working with students to help improve their writing. My philosophy and approach as a tutor has always been based on connection and compassion. I believe that writing is an extension of how we view ourselves, and therefore is inherently tied to our self-esteem and a belief in being able to express our voices authentically with conviction and confidence. I have worked with students of a variety of ages (middle school, high school, and college) and abilities. A typical lesson will start by introducing the "writing process" and assessing where a student's strengths and weaknesses lie, as well as understanding a student's goals, ambitions, and interests. From there, I will craft individualized lessons that will not only help the student become a better writer, but provide tools, strategies, and a lifelong approach to tackle any writing-based assignment.
