About Rachel

I’ve spent more than a decade helping students learn, grow, and find their voice. I became an educator because I know how powerful it is when a child feels seen and supported — and because I never want a student to sit alone with confusion or self-doubt. I’m patient, encouraging, and genuinely invested in every learner I work with. When a student says, “Wow, I get it now,” that’s the moment that makes this work worth it to me.

About the lesson

I personalize every lesson to each student’s needs, using a warm, supportive teaching style that builds confidence and skills step by step. I typically begin by identifying goals and assessing strengths, then I design engaging activities, guided practice, and real-world application. I teach English language arts, writing, math, and ESL, and I have 25 years of experience helping students from grade 3 through adults. What sets me apart is my ability to explain concepts in a way that feels clear and relatable, helping students not only understand but truly enjoy learning!

Sample Typical Lesson Plan – Writing Tutoring (45–60 minutes)
Warm-Up & Skill Activation (5 minutes)
A short prompt or quick review question to activate prior knowledge (example: “Write one sentence describing how you feel today using sensory details”).
This helps students ease in, lowers anxiety, and builds confidence.
Goal-Setting & Mini-Lesson (10 minutes)
We identify the focus skill (ex: thesis statements, paragraph structure, transitions, descriptive language).
I provide a clear model or demonstration — showing strong vs. weak examples so students can visually compare best practices.
Guided Practice (15 minutes)
We write together, side-by-side. The student produces part of a paragraph or draft while I offer live support, sentence starters, and strategy prompts (“What is the purpose of this sentence?” “Can we add imagery?”).
This stage ensures the student understands how to use the skill.
Independent Writing Time (10–15 minutes)
Students apply the lesson independently, building stamina and ownership.
During this time, I observe silently, take notes, and only assist when needed — supporting autonomy.
Feedback & Revision (5–10 minutes)
We read aloud and use a simple revision checklist tailored to their level (clarity, organization, grammar, vocabulary).
The student practices self-editing — a key long-term skill.
Exit Reflection & Home Practice (2 minutes)
We end with one reflection question (“What was easiest today?” “What will you try again next time?”).
If appropriate, I assign a small, manageable home task — usually 5–10 minutes, such as finishing a paragraph or brainstorming ideas.
