About Richard
I was a reporter and editor at three Pulitzer Prize-winning daily newspapers. I have a master's in history from American Military University. I was at Altamont. I covered the Patty Hearst kidnapping case. I've written extensively about history. especially early American history, but including untold stories like the Ocoee (Flordia) race massacre in 1921. I've been thanked by name in the acknowledgment sections of two non-fiction works. I'm a research fanatic and love to delve into the unknown of major stories. I've loved history my entire life, or at least as soon as I was old enough to read and look around. My career as a journalist has allowed me to report on many of the major historical events of the last half-century. I received my master's in history late in my career, as I was about to retire. Discovered my love of teaching at Northwestern University as an adjunct instructor at Medill's graduate school of journalism. My philosophy about teaching history is that it's an adventure, an exploration. For every event written about in current history books, there are fascinating pieces of the story that are not widely known.
