The focus always is on the student's ability to tell a story. Step one is isolating the main events, step two explaining how they are connected. In conclusion, presenting this knowledge coherently is the goal of each lesson.
There is no single, unique approach that works for all students.
Discussing relevance for the student can help some with motivation. For others, the difficulty may lie more in the quantity of factoids that beg for attention. Others still may struggle with the need to express the concepts simply and clearly. It is my job to base my approach on the requirements of the student.
