About Chris
I'm currently a PhD student in Marine Biology at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. My formal experience ranges from teaching introductory college-level biology courses, to assisting in teaching more advanced courses, to teaching SCUBA diving classes in Mexico. A lot of my teaching focus has been on understanding the "big" concepts in life science, understanding how to use the scientific method, how to write effectively (not just in science), and how to interpret graphs/understand science-based problems--all very helpful for college prep. I've received many positive reviews and a lot of positive feedback from my students. I've also been involved with many science-based outreach events for students ranging from elementary-college. Overall, my goals are to help you really "get it" when it comes to the material in your science classes, become a better writer, and better prepare you for college or graduate school.

My basic philosophy in teaching is that we're all born scientists--that is, we're all naturally curious. That's what it's all about. Sometimes though, science classes can make you feel like it's just too complicated... or too boring. What I want to do is to help you see that the concepts you're learning about, whether in middle school or in college, can still be simple, interesting, and that YOU CAN DO IT. I start each lesson by going over the concept(s) we're studying, showing example(s) of how they might apply to a "bigger picture" issue (that we might actually care about), and inviting a back and forth discussion of what I've talked about. In answering questions, I'll often ask others, which allows students to truly learn the material rather than just memorize it for a short time. I'll also take as much time as needed to help individuals with specific questions or problems; again, I really want you to walk away understanding something you might not have before we met.
