The glowing rainbow mists erupted from the crater in my backyard like miniature geysers. With a rock in my hand, I peered into the hole and saw nothing but swirling, multi-colored gases that hid how deep it went.
I hurled the rock into the opaque hole; the impact was immediate and made a light thud – it was shallow. “Great, at least the fall won’t kill me,” I muttered sarcastically.
I glared at the mists with a demeanor that feigned courage. I knew faking a tough image for a supernatural creature that could see right through me was futile, but my pride wouldn’t allow the terrified little girl in me to show herself.
At a snail’s pace, I reluctantly inched myself closer to the edge of the crater, thinking back to what led me to that moment.
