About Sue
My background includes a Computer Science degree from MIT (which was very math heavy), an MBA in Finance from Northwestern University, a long career in software and technology, and years of hands-on experience helping my own children and friends’ children with math, science, computer science, and test preparation. I also work part-time as a coach at theCoderSchool, teaching elementary school kids how to program. I love math and the process of demystifying it.
I am a mom of two boys, age 16 and 20. I understand the pressure that families are under regarding preparing for the college application process.

I tutor students (elementary school through high school) in Math: elementary & middle school through AP Calculus (includes Pre-algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2, Precalculus & Trigonometry, AP Calculus, and AP Statistics). I also do SAT tutoring.
Here's a little FAQ about my tutoring services:
What's your teaching approach?
I focus on real understanding over memorization, since math especially builds on itself. I explain concepts multiple ways until one clicks, and use diagrams, physical tools, and written steps to make material manageable.
I also put a strong emphasis on practice; getting good at something requires being willing to be bad at it first, and I try to build students' comfort with that struggle rather than let them avoid it.
Do you work with students who have ADHD or learning differences?
Yes. I have ADHD myself, so I understand firsthand how working-memory limits, distraction, task initiation, and time management can interfere with learning—even when a student understands the material and is fully capable of doing the work.
I use practical strategies to reduce cognitive load, break problems into manageable steps, make reasoning visible on paper, and build repeatable systems for approaching difficult assignments. I’ve also spent many years experimenting with executive-function tools, routines, time-management techniques, and ways to make it easier to get started and stay engaged.
There is no single strategy that works for every student. I draw from a wide range of approaches and help each student figure out what actually works for them.
Can you help a student who's fallen behind?
Yes. I can guide your student through intensive, short-term catch-up work: identifying missing fundamentals, prioritizing what matters most, and building a focused plan. I'm comfortable with meeting students up to four times a week for intensive work sessions, until the student is caught up. At that point, we can transition to once-a-week
One example: At Thanksgiving I started working intensively with a student with a D- in AP Calculus. We managed to raise his grade to a B- by Christmas. The following semester he earned an A and a 5 on the AP exam. (This required our working together 10 hours a week for 5 weeks, plus him doing lots of individual work with a curriculum I prepared for him.)
What's your approach to SAT and AP exam prep?
Heavy use of real exam questions and full-length practice tests. After each one, we go through what went wrong and what went right, then redo those problems until they're consistently correct. Repetition on real material reduces test anxiety and builds genuine confidence, rather than confidence based on false comfort.
What do sessions look like?
It depends on the student and the situation, but usually includes a combination of homework support, test prep, fundamentals review, grade recovery, a structured curriculum with practice between sessions, or a mix of current schoolwork and longer-term skill building.
How do you communicate with parents?
I maintain a learning plan, track progress, flag weak areas, and send regular updates, adjusting the plan as needs change. Here is an example session report that I provide to both the student and the parents, every time we meet. For students on a weekly schedule, I also offer a free 30-minute parent-teacher conference once a month.
What's the goal?
Not just finishing the next assignment, but understanding the material well enough that future classes get easier, not harder.
