About Josh
I am a practicing artist with a studio in South London and my paintings are represented in prestigious art collections internationally. I also have extensive experience as a teacher and in the last ten years have taught thousands of students in top UK art schools including UAL Camberwell, Kingston School of art and Goldsmiths University of London. I have taught drawing, painting, art history, Illustration and Animation as well as creative thinking and design. My primary aim with teaching is to boost students confidence in their own abilities to help them flourish as creatives.
I was once told by an art teacher that I wasn't good at drawing - I proved them wrong and I love to help others do the same!

I teach art and design with an aim to boost students self confidence. I tailor my approach to each individuals interests and help to enhance their own unique abilities.
My classes involve the observation of historic and contemporary artworks and the exploration of them through drawing. The classes focus on how we see and how we can then respond using different drawing or picture making methods.
Lessons between 1 and 2 hours.
I currently teach drawing in the School of Media, Communications and Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths University and have worked in the past for UAL Camberwell, Kingston University, UCA Farnham and Canterbury, University of Middlesex and The National Film and Television School among others. I also run a successful online drawing series called Secrets of Seeing with London Drawing Group with an extensive global audience. In the last decade I have taught thousands of students to become more confidant in their own creative expression.
With my deep understanding of university/art school practices I am uniquely aware of what is required for portfolios as well as for passing courses to a high level.
I am comfortable teaching most ages but I thrive helping students who find themselves feeling blocked or stuck at a certain level. I have most experience working with people ages 18 and above but am willing to discuss helping those younger.

I had the pleasure of having Josh as my BA final year tutor. He knew how to balance challenging/pushing my ideas forward whilst still respecting my creative autonomy as a student. Not only was he a comforting figure in post-Covid education but also a down to earth person who I felt understood the hardships of student life. Thank you Josh :)
Josh is an incredible tutor. His expertise in drawing and making and passion for his own practice is invaluable. I feel very lucky to have been taught by him.
I worked alongside Josh for over five years. He is an exceptional tutor and creative professional.
Josh specialised in teaching illustration, painting, printmaking, and narrative storytelling, teaching digital and traditional methods of painting and collage. The students work was fantastic.
Josh has the ability to teach complex concepts in fun, achievable, and engaging workshops. His teaching approach inspires confidence and allows students to express their personalities while challenging them to produce the best work they can. Josh has a fantastic way of making learning exciting, and his sessions are always dynamic and creative.
Josh is also incredibly reliable, and an excellent communicator. He has a natural talent for connecting with students individually, and creating a supportive and inspiring learning environment.
The amazing feedback he consistently received from students would repeatedly reference his practical, down to earth approach alongside his knowledge, skills and his dedication to the students improving their work and understanding.Josh is a superb drawing teacher. He has the ability to communicate complex visual ideas around drawing and does so in a way that inspires his students, whether they be at degree, MA or professional level. Josh has the uncanny ability to enthuse people about drawing who see themselves as non-professional artists. He is able to lead in studio drawing sessions, location (outside) sessions, collaboration workshops, online teaching and much much more. I have worked with him on several occasions and also been to his lessons; experiencing his teaching from both points of view and strongly attest to his abilities and would highly recommend him without hesitation.
I've attended almost all of Josh's classes with the London Drawing Group (I still regret missing one of them!) and I honestly believe he's taught me more about looking and drawing that I learned during a three-year art degree at university. His style is friendly and approachable, with an emphasis on good creative habits, very accessible techniques and the process of looking rather than rigid practical rules which means you can genuinely carry this knowledge into your life and art practice. He encourages experimentation and has an infectious passion for art making, every one of his classes has left me feeling energised and creatively fulfilled. I've been recommending LDG and Josh's classes in particular to all of my friends and hope to attend many more in the future!
Josh is a fantastic teacher! His “Secrets of Seeing” classes are very engaging, opening, full of fantastic exercises and creative drawing techniques. Josh have found a perfect balance between sharing lots of knowledge (all the secrets!), inspire and give time for drawing exercises. In Josh’s classes I literally feel I’m getting rid of my creative block and getting into the flow. And he’s a lovely person, too. My favourite art/drawing class online by far!
Brilliant classes with Josh through University. I didn't know how lucky I was! He teaches ideas around drawing as well as technical skills, which gives everything so much more meaning.
Josh taught a fantastic class at the National Film and Television School. His teaching methodology and practical tips not only boosted my confidence but also helped me achieve great results in my life drawing skills.
Josh’s lesson was well planned, enabled me to see and practice in a new way, and was conducted in a joyful fashion. Thank you.
I’ve taken a few Secrets of Seeing classes with Josh and they were brilliant. I learnt so much that I could use to keep developing my drawing practise on my own. He is a natural teacher and makes learning to draw accessible, breaking down steps and demystifying process. 10/10 ️
As someone who is a little unsure about making things Josh made me feel so comfortable and excited about trying new things. Amazing to learn from someone with so much talent and knowledge
Josh taught me life drawing at Kingston University 7 years ago almost, but I still use techniques that were taught in his sessions in my own practice to this day. I’ve been to so many life drawing classes and so often they feel formulaic and rigid, but Josh teaches with an energy that encourages young artists to observe the world in a totally refreshing light; he introduced me to numerous artists who are still my heroes now. Highly recommend as a tutor.
I’ve been taught by Josh a few times in online group classes and he’s a fab tutor and since finding his classes I now look for the classes he teaches (with LDG) specifically. He teaches clearly with structured lessons and I appreciate that he uses examples both from art history and of how it could be used as part of someone’s normal practice (eg in one class showing artists’ work who painted on location and a video of him actually drawing on a street and the real world practicalities of this. Mixed with well thought through exercises that I still find useful as someone who isn’t a beginner, but which those new to drawing would really benefit from. He’s also great at answering people’s questions and demonstrating clearly, which can be a weak spot in online classes I’ve found. I do online art classes regularly with a different school (which isn’t as geared to beginners) but still sign up to all Josh’s classes I see.
Josh is an amazing teacher. He gives great advice and is so versatile in his teaching methods/ has creative ideas to bring topics to you. Really enjoyed having a class about patterns and colour with him (via London drawing group). Also he is all about making you find your process and never tires of reminding you that making art is not a competition and to be kind to yourself and your creative process. I highly recommend him!
I have studied with Josh numerous times and his courses have really helped me to look and see what I am drawing. He is a very skilled teacher, provides well thought out presentations and exercises and is an all round good human being. Any chance I can take a class with him I do!
Josh is a generous and encouraging tutor. He clearly gives a great deal of thought to his lessons, as they build on his research around the subject and are packed with interesting examples, illustrations and, of course, some helpful secrets to improve your art practice.
