About Melissa
All students can learn. This has been my educational motto since I began teaching 12 years ago. I care about student growth. I care about whether the student learns or not. Even if the student is apathetic toward his or her own learning, I must find a way to incorporate knowledge. Asking students for their insight and opinions on their own learning is often beneficial. I take what they say into great consideration and use it to help deliver instruction that is parallel to their preferred way of learning.

Over the past twelve years of being both a public and online educator, I've learned what works for students and what does not. No matter who or where a student is, it is imperative to build a relationship. After that relationship has been established, learning can then truly begin. I must first determine where the student is academically. I have to know the strengths and weaknesses so I can focus on those skills not yet mastered. After I have established the skills that need honing, I then plan the lesson that is most appropriate for the student. I analyze the student's educational state standards, determine those anchor standards (a term I use for standards that are covered year-round in school), and find lessons that are suited to those specific standards.
I've managed to quickly determine the instructional method with which the student learns best. When I find out how he or she best learns, that will be my main method of teaching, especially when I'm just introducing a new skill or lesson.
Over the last 12 years as a certified English, History, and Mild to Moderate Disabilities teacher, I have gained useful insight into how students best learn. The lessons that I plan coincide with student needs, whether this is for those who are learning disabled, gifted, behind in grade level, or simply just apathetic. All children can learn, and as an educator, I must find out the best way to deliver the content for the utmost student success.
