About Tyler
I'm a high school English teacher with four years of classroom experience in ELA, plus a background in curriculum and unit design. My day job is building lessons that work for a full class of thirty teenagers, which means I've learned in detail what engages bright kids and what makes them check out. Tutoring is where I get to apply that work one-on-one, with the time and attention a classroom rarely allows.
My teaching style is structured but not rigid. Every student I work with gets clear learning targets, scaffolds built around how they actually think, and lessons that don't talk down to them. I'm especially comfortable working with neurodivergent students and students who are bright but disengaged; the ones who can do the work but need a reason to care about it. I hold a degree in Secondary Education with a concentration in English Language Arts from the University of New Mexico.
I'm also a working creative writer outside the classroom, so writing students get real craft conversations from me: what makes a sentence land, why a thesis fails, how to revise without losing your voice. I take this work seriously, and I treat my students like the smart, capable people they are.

My lessons focus on creative, student-specific lessons that make literature interactive rather than something done to them. High schoolers learn best when they can build on what they already know and care about. So, I fuse pop culture with literature and writing; a rhetorical argument defending your favorite music artist uses the same techniques that work in a Faulkner essay, but now the student actually wants to nail the thesis.
Every lesson plan is built around the specific student in front of me; how they think, what hooks them, and where they are stuck. This personalization centers on each student first and honors their achievements and struggles in equal measure.
A typical session: Quick check-in on what we've been building (5 min), focused mini-lesson on a specific skill like thesis construction, close reading, or evidence integration (15-20 min), then applied practice using material the student actually cares about, with me coaching alongside rather than lecturing at them (25-30 min). We end by naming what we just did and what's next, so they leave with momentum.
Who I work best with: Middle and high school students (grades 6-12), especially gifted students who are struggling, disengaged, or stuck — kids who can clearly do the work but aren't, often for reasons more about how material is presented than about ability. I work regularly with neurodivergent students and design lessons that play to how they actually think. I support essay writing, literary analysis, reading comprehension, AP English prep, college application essays, and creative writing.
