About Shannon
I am a very driven, motivated, and hardworking student, with a passion for the fundamental aspects of human biology. I have recently finished studying at Rochdale Sixth Form College in May, which has taken a lot of discipline and dedication to not only build an adaptable approach to the challenges encountered with covid and online learning but to also ensure I remained motivated; putting in the work to keep my grades at the high standard I expected of myself even with all of the uncertainty. This has led to me becoming a much more independent, versatile, and mature student and I feel I am ready to put these
skills and attributes gained from my experiences and put them to use with online tutoring and teaching.
I was also selected in sixth-form to tutor year 12 students who were underachieving and needed help in Biology. This involved one to one session outside of lesson times in which I would plan and set specific questions for them to answer which would identify their key weaknesses and misconceptions. This would include a mix of AO1, AO2 and AO2 specific exam-style questions I would then address their weaknesses by going over and giving both visual using whiteboard diagrams and verbal explanations, allowing them to ask any questions. This not only helped improve the knowledge and confidence of the students I worked with, but it was also a particularly good revision resource for myself a year 13 second-year student, as I was going over the content I had not looked at in a while. During covid, I had to conduct these one-to-one sessions online using Microsoft Teams which we also used for lessons. This was challenging but I still made sure to deliver good quality sessions to the students in which I tried to explain visually using the interactive online whiteboard and using the microphone to explain verbally to them. I would work my way through content from the biology specification with them focusing on areas their teachers had addressed as weaknesses from in-class exams, also allowing them to suggest specific topic areas in which they do not feel confident with.

My teaching method is learner-focused; I like to involve the learners by ensuring my lessons are suited to their areas of weaknesses, whilst making sure they are engaging and interactive. I like to use demonstrations, diagrams and videos to teach students visually combining them with verbal based explanations as I feel this is very effective in helping the students understand. I plan and set specific questions for them to answer which would identify learners key weaknesses and misconceptions. This would include a mix of AO1, AO2 and AO3 specific exam-style questions I would then address their misunderstanding by going over and giving both the visual and verbal explanations of the content, allowing them to ask any questions throughout. I tend to work my way through content from the specification with them focusing on areas highlighted, allowing them to suggest specific topic areas with which they did not feel as confident.
