About Tristan

I have been teaching ESL for the past 15 years to students from diverse countries including Vietnam, Korea, Japan and China. For ten of those years I taught ESL privately at students’ homes.

Since 2015, I have been working as an educational assistant for the local public school board, where I support students with behavioral, neurological and developmental disabilities. I also get the opportunity to teach ESL to several students who are new to Canada.

Prior to being an educational assistant, I taught English in Vietnam for 10 years. I taught children from ages 4 to 16. In many cases, I tutored students at their homes.

About the lesson

My philosophy in teaching is very simple: Learn and have fun doing it! Many of my activities include singing, playing games, coloring, and using interactive PC games. I like to use lots of visual aids like flashcards and short videos. If it's fun and engaging I do it. If it's not fun and engaging, I don't do it.

With reading specifically, your child and I will discuss the cover and pictures of the book we are about to read. We will ask questions. I then will read along with your child at their pace making sure they never lose confidence. We will then discuss the story with us asking and answering each other's questions. I will then finish the lesson by helping the child in the areas he or she had problems with, whether it's the reading or the pronunciation.

Not every student is the same. I will recognize what works and what doesn't work with each student and alter my lesson plans accordingly.
