About Franz

My education background lies in Mathematics with a focus on Probability Theory, Statistics, Financial Mathematics and Actuarial Science. I hold a B.Sc. in Mathematics (Technical University Munich), an M.Sc. in Mathematical Finance and Actuarial Science (Technical University Munich) and a PhD in Statistics (University of Oxford). I have further collected signifcant study and research experience across the globe, including the French-speaking Université du Québec à Montréal (Canada), Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China) and Brown University (USA), an Ivy league institution. During my times at school, I won prizes in several German Mathematics competitions (e.g. German federal competition of mathematics, Bavarian mathematics competition).

I have been tutoring students since I was 16, starting as a tutor for secondary level. During my studies at TU Munich, I gained further experience as a class tutor in a wide range of subjects in Probability Theory. In the past years, I held college lectureships in Mathematics at several prestigious Oxford Colleges, e.g. Christ Church, Lady Margaret Hall, Exeter and Brasenose as well as teaching positions at the Department of Statistics (Oxford). I also conducted interviews for undergraduate studies in Mathematics at Oxford, so I am happy to help you with interview preparation.

In total, I have taught over 150 different students over the years, most of them in college tutorials (in pairs) at Oxford University. The feedback from students was very positive, mainly focusing on the relaxed and positive atmosphere during the lessons and the teaching approach that enables them to grasp the mathematical ideas quickly. I am happy to provide references.

About the lesson

My aim is to get students excited about mathematics by explaining the content in a comprehensible and intuitive way, before getting into the rigorous mathematical terms.

For a lesson, I typically expect the student to be prepared to make most use of his time. From my experience it is most beneficial to the student, if they send me some guidance beforehand, e.g. what exercises they struggle with. I will then tailor the structure of the lesson accordingly to make it beneficial to the student by preparing further material on the topic.

Every lesson contains a review of the theoretical concept and then a lot of practical problem solving. It is this hands-on experience that makes you really understand and learn mathematics. When we prepare for exams we will work on exam methodologies and practice via old papers. Having written over 50 mathematics exams at university myself, I am happy to share tips and tricks.

I am only satisfied if my student fully understands the concepts in the end. They shall be equipped with the capabilities to succeed. Mathematics should be fun. I have a friendly personality and will keep a positive spirit at all times.
