It is worthwhile to note that the nomenclature of a simple organic compounds is primarilya function of the number of carbon atoms, the homologous series and the functional groups. This can be likened to the affixation ( prefix+ root+suffix)
The prefix is the number of carbon atoms, the root the homologous series and the suffix the functional group. The number of carbon is prefixed as follows

3- prop
4- but, etc
