About Varun Reddy

I am a data scientist at Teck Resources Ltd. I hold a master's degree from the University of British Columbia and I have been taking one-on-one tutoring sessions for more than 5 years. I am very comfortable taking group sessions too. I am very proficient in English.

About the lesson

I prepare myself two classes ahead of what I plan to teach the students. I come well prepared to the class and build a good conversation around the topic so it's easy to grasp and hold on. I am very patient while teaching and I rephrase the way I explain the concepts if the student finds it difficult to understand. Sessions will be laser-focused on getting the concepts right, gaining the ability to solve complex problems. Session types: 1. Textbook revision - Detailed discussion on textbook topics. 2. Assignment solving - Guided assignment solving. 3. Software - Sessions focusing on usage of Calculator, Excel, and Python to solve math problems.

Varun tutored me in biostats for my MPH program and he was a total life-saver. Stats isn't my wheelhouse and doesn't come naturally to me, but you can really tell that the opposite is true for Varun. He's kind and clear, he prepares for his sessions and he really knows his stuff. If you have excel-based statistics that you need a tutor for, Varun is an excellent choice!

1. When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?
I'm currently working as a Data Scientist. It has been two years since switched from an Engineering role to this role. It was during my post graduation I developed keen interest in Statistics and it's real life applications.
2. What makes you passionate about your subject?
I believe in numbers rather than hunches. I'm passionate about statistics because it allows me back the facts with numbers. With computation costs getting lower each year, I see the power statistical models hold in artificial intelligence.
3. What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?
The thing I like about tutoring is explaining complex concepts visually so that they are better understood and retained for a longer period of time.
Statistics has a bit of a learning curve as the terminology is different from common language. So, teaching Stats visually is what makes me a "Superprof"
4. Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain
Yes, I do have a role model. He is a current professor at UBC, Vancouver. It was his course that inspired me to take up a career in Statistics. The thing I liked about him was the way he would let us arrive us the solution without explicitly giving out the hints or answer. I have certainly picked up a skill or two from his style of teaching and have been successfully implementing in my sessions.
5. What are your keys to success?
I still remember my high school chemistry teachers words. She once said "Knowledge shared is doubled". I work on this philosophy and try to share as much relevant information to students as possible. My keys to success are student satisfaction and continuous improvement.
