About Dr Tong

I’m a Computational Social Scientist with over 20 years of experience in Higher Education, as well as an AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner. I’m also an experienced researcher and author, having published 10 books and authored more than 50 academic and professional articles.

I teach data literacy, AI literacy, AI ethics and responsible practice, data analysis and visualisation, data analytics, data mining, data science, Python, research skills and cloud computing. I support learners at all levels—from complete beginners and non-technical professionals to university students and more technically focused learners.

My approach combines technical knowledge, research expertise, critical thinking and real-world application. I don’t just teach how to use tools—I help learners understand and explore data, identify patterns and insights, communicate findings through effective visualisations, and critically evaluate evidence. I also help learners question AI and analytical outputs, recognise limitations and bias, and use data and technology responsibly and effectively.

Lessons are tailored to your existing knowledge, interests and goals. Whether you want to build confidence with data and AI, strengthen your research skills, learn how to analyse and visualise data, explore data mining techniques, develop practical Python and data science skills, understand responsible AI, or learn the foundations of cloud computing, I focus on making complex ideas clear, accessible and practical.

About the lesson

My teaching approach

I offer personalised Python and Artificial Intelligence (AI) lessons for complete beginners, students, researchers and professionals.

As a Computational Social Scientist with over 20 years of experience in Higher Education, I understand that learners come with different goals, backgrounds and levels of technical confidence.

My teaching approach is practical, engaging and learner-focused. I combine clear explanations with hands-on exercises, live demonstrations, real-world examples and guided projects. My aim is not simply to show you how to use Python or AI tools, but to help you understand how they work, when to use them, how to evaluate their outputs critically, and how to apply what you learn confidently and responsibly.

You will be encouraged to ask questions, experiment and solve problems. I aim to make complex technical concepts accessible without oversimplifying them, so that you develop both practical skills and the confidence to work independently.

Python for Beginners

If you have never programmed before, we can start from the very beginning. Topics can include:
- Getting started with Python
- Variables and data types
- Operators and expressions
- Conditional statements
- Loops
- Functions
- Lists, dictionaries and other data structures
- Reading and working with data
- Debugging and problem-solving
- Writing clear and reusable code
No previous coding experience is required.

Python for Data Analysis

For learners who want to use Python to work with data, lessons can include:
- Importing and working with datasets
- Data cleaning and preparation
- Exploring and summarising data
- Data manipulation
- Data analysis using Python
- Data visualisation
- Interpreting analytical results
- Working with real-world datasets
- Developing practical data projects
For students and researchers, lessons can also explore how Python can support research and computational analysis.

Artificial Intelligence & AI Literacy

You do not need to be a programmer to learn about AI.

I offer AI lessons for learners who want to understand what AI is, how contemporary AI systems work, what they can and cannot do, and how to use them effectively and responsibly.

Topics can include:

- AI literacy
- Generative AI
- Large Language Models (LLMs)

Where appropriate, we can also work on a practical project over several sessions, allowing you to apply what you learn and develop confidence through experience.

Qualifications & experience

I am a Computational Social Scientist with over 20 years of experience in Higher Education and an AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner.

I am also an experienced researcher and author, having published 10 books and more than 50 academic and professional articles.

My Higher Education background has given me extensive experience in teaching, research, mentoring and supporting learners at different levels.

My interdisciplinary background enables me to connect technical skills with the wider research, social, organisational and ethical contexts in which Python, data and AI are used.

My areas of expertise relevant to these lessons include Python, Artificial Intelligence, AI Literacy, AI Ethics and Responsible Practice, Data Literacy, Data Analysis and Visualisation, Data Science, Computational Research and Cloud Computing.

If you already have some experience, lessons can be tailored to more advanced applications of Python, data analysis and AI.
