About Rachael

Hello, I'm Rachael, a friendly and patient Guitar and Ukulele Tutor with more than 25 years of teaching experience helping both adults and children from aged five, make real progress.

My teaching journey began as a 6th former continuing on throughout my Music Degree (1st study Guitar) at Kingston University. After my teaching qualification (PGCE), I taught Secondary School class music and then became a full-time peripatetic Guitar Teacher.

Since then I have worked in Schools across four Counties delivering one to one and small group lessons to children in years 1 to 13. I teach both Acoustic and Classical styles as well as Ukulele, and my focus is to make learning feel simple, enjoyable and achievable, even if you've never picked one up before.

I have entered hundreds of pupils for grades over many years with excellent results, although many others simply enjoy learning to play their favourite chart songs.

I have daytime availability for Adults of all ages to have an online Guitar or Ukulele lesson whether you're a complete beginner or honing your skills. The number one priority for me is to make your lessons FUN!!

About the lesson

My personal teaching style is demonstrating and coaching, practical and flexible to the individual student. We do more playing than talking!

For the Classical style I recommend working through a tutor book which lays a good technical foundation and teaches you to read traditional notation.

When learning Acoustic Guitar or Ukulele, we will learn chords and smooth transitions, strumming patterns and rhythm, and choose the songs you enjoy!

A great first lesson! Abi has a good base knowledge of the fretboard, can read notation, and can play using a free stroke right hand technique. I have every confidence she will make a great guitarist!

Through zoom lessons alone, she has nurtured my son's guitar playing weekly over the past 2.5 years with structure, patience and always fun. And achievement too, as he will be sitting his Grade 4 exam next week.

When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?
I loved music from a very early age. As a 3 year old I would make up little tunes on the piano with my sister and then around 8 years old I picked up the guitar and have loved it ever since.
Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?
I prefer to listen to a wide selection of music depending on how I'm feeling that day, be it Pop, Rock, Jazz, Classical or Country and everything else in between.
Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.
My approach to lessons is to make everything a student does achievable for them.
What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?
Every instrument could be perceived as complicated to master but you just need a great teacher!
What are your keys to success?
Fun, kindness and encouragement.

I am a highly experienced teacher, having taught people of all ages over many years, and entered hundreds of people for grade exams. I'm passionate about teaching and love seeing my students enjoying their lessons, progressing and developing a love for their instrument.
