About Simon

I hold a Rockschool teaching diploma as well as Masters and Batchelors degrees in music which means I don't only know my stuff, I know how to get it across to students!

I have been a working musician for my entire adult life and been teaching for 15+ years now. I tailor my lessons to every individual to make their learning journey as much fun as possible, learning songs immediately to get you playing real music fast!

I started my teaching careeer with Yamaha Musical Instruments who used Rockschool for their examination board, so I worked closely with Rockschool exams and examiners. I know the syllabus extremely well and I know what the examiners are looking for, so if you choose that route then I can give you detailed information on how to progress through the grades and achieve the highest results.

I am also very experienced in working with high school students to aid with their school curriculum music exams

About the lesson

I teach guitar skills first of all by learning songs. It is songs that we respond to musically, and in a band setting it is what we play. That means from your first lesson you can start to make real music with your instrument. Practice is what makes playing more fun as you progress, and as we move through more pieces you develop skills along the way that are incorporated into the songs.

My students can choose to ask me to teach them songs by their favourite artists, use some of my own bespoke pieces, or follow the Rockschool or Trinity syllabi. I strongly recommend Rockschool for it's excellent songs and backing tracks, and the progression through grades introduces new skills as manageable goals. You will learn about playing chords, melodies and riffs. You will develop improvisation skills with scales and arpeggios, and all the practical music theory you need to make real music.

I am available for face to face tuition if you are local to me, either at your own home or at my home studio. I also teach students nationally and internationally by Zoom / Skype etc
