  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your heritage, or did a teacher inspire you to learn it?

I speak Dutch fluently because I was born and raised here in Belgium and learned it as my mother tongue. Although my parents come from India and Bulgaria, they have always loved Belgium and made it their home. As a result, I was fully immersed in the language from an early age, which is why I speak Dutch so fluently.
  • 2) Quote a living, historical, or fictional character that, in your opinion, is the ultimate symbol representing the respective culture!

A fictional character that, in my opinion, symbolizes Flemish culture is Jan De Smid, a hardworking and resourceful blacksmith from a small village in Flanders. Jan embodies some core values strongly associated with the Flemish and Belgian mentality: work ethic, modesty, creativity, and a sense of community.

Jan is a man of few words but has a big heart for his craft. Like many Flemings, he works diligently and with precision—an attribute that can be found in Belgium’s craftsmanship, from brewers to chocolatiers. His blacksmith shop is not just a workplace; it is a place where people come together, exchange ideas, and help each other, just like in Flemish culture, where coziness and solidarity are central.
Moreover, Jan is inventive. He finds smart solutions to technical problems and symbolizes the Belgian and Flemish innovative spirit. This is evident in the many Belgian inventions and the high number of patents per capita. From the development of the saxophone to groundbreaking medical technologies, Belgians are known for their creative problem-solving and pragmatic approach.

Lastly, Jan radiates modesty. He does not boast about his work but lets his results speak for themselves—a trait typical of the Flemish mentality. He remains true to his values, helps his neighbors when needed, and respects traditions without fearing innovation.
In this way, Jan De Smid symbolizes the essence of Flemish culture: hard work without boasting, pragmatism, innovation, and a strong sense of community.
  • 3) Is there a word, expression, tradition, or typical behavior in this culture that you find special or enjoyable?

A typical Flemish word that I absolutely love is ‘goesting.’ It means something like desire or craving, but with an extra layer of enthusiasm and passion. People in Flanders use it all the time: ‘Ik heb goesting in een frietje’ (I’m craving some fries) or ‘Ik heb goesting om op reis te gaan’ (I feel like going on a trip). It sounds so much warmer and livelier than just saying ‘I feel like it.’ I love it because it truly expresses something—a kind of energy and enthusiasm that you immediately feel. And that makes it so much fun!
  • 4) Why is it important to speak this language?

Speaking Dutch is essential to fully participating in Flemish society. First, language opens the door to social and professional opportunities. Those who speak the language can find work more easily, follow education, and take part in community life.

Additionally, language is the key to integration. Speaking Dutch means not only communicating but also connecting with the culture, norms, and values of Flanders. This fosters mutual understanding and prevents social isolation.

In education, Dutch is also crucial. Children of non-Dutch-speaking parents who do not speak Dutch at home often face difficulties in school. Parents who master the language can better support their children and improve their educational opportunities.

Finally, learning Dutch contributes to self-confidence and independence. Those who can express themselves fluently feel stronger in daily life, in administration, healthcare, and social interactions. In short, learning Dutch is not an end in itself but a necessary step toward a successful future in Flanders.
  • 5) What are the biggest difficulties of this language, and what can help in learning it?

One of the biggest difficulties of Dutch is its complex grammatical structure, especially word order and the different verb forms. According to research by prominent linguists such as Johanna Muysken and Folkert Kuiken, the so-called V2 rule (where the verb must be in the second position in the sentence) and separable verbs can cause confusion for non-native speakers.

Additionally, Dutch pronunciation and sounds present a challenge. The diphthongs (such as "ui" and "eu") and the soft "g" are difficult for many language learners to produce. Research by linguist David Singleton emphasizes that listening skills and phonetic training are essential for learning to pronounce these sounds correctly.

What helps in learning Dutch? Studies in applied linguistics, such as those by Paul Boersma and Bert Weltens, show that a communicative approach—where the language is actively used in real contexts—is very effective. Practicing speaking and listening regularly, immersing oneself in a Dutch-speaking environment, and using authentic materials (such as podcasts and news articles) can significantly ease the learning process. Furthermore, research by Stephen Krashen highlights that motivation and exposure to comprehensible input are crucial factors in language acquisition.

In short, despite the challenges, learning Dutch can be greatly facilitated by a communicative approach, regular exposure, and active participation in the language.
  • 6) Can you tell us a fun anecdote related to your profession or school days?

Absolutely! One of the most memorable moments of my career as a Dutch teacher was when I had a student who did not speak a single word of Dutch at our first lesson. He had just arrived in Belgium and felt insecure about the language.

To make him feel comfortable, I decided to hold our first lesson in a café, in a relaxed atmosphere. I drew simple things on a napkin—a cup of coffee, a chair, a table—and immediately taught him the first words. We played a game where he had to point and repeat the word. After a few lessons, he started to gain more confidence and dared to have small conversations with the waitress.

A few months later, I received a message from him: "Today, I placed my first order in Dutch, without hesitation!" That moment, which seemed small to him, was a huge confirmation for me of why I love teaching so much. It is wonderful to see someone grow and experience the joy of learning a new language!
  • 7) Help us get to know you better by telling us about some of the trips you have taken.

During my trip to South Africa, I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to understand Afrikaans. Although it is not exactly the same as Dutch, it still felt familiar. I love traveling, but South Africa was the only country outside the Netherlands where I encountered a language so closely related to Dutch. I was in South Africa, specifically in the Western Cape region, to learn Afrikaans better, as I have a great passion for languages. It fascinates me how languages evolve and how they connect us with different cultures.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof, besides the fact that you can express yourself in multiple languages?

What makes me a Superprof, besides my ability to express myself in multiple languages, is my passion for teaching and my years of experience in guiding students to success. I offer tailor-made lessons, adapted to each student's specific needs, goals, and learning style.
As a private teacher, both online and face-to-face, I excel in patience, empathy, and a motivational approach. I create a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable and gain confidence in their language skills. My interactive and communicative method encourages active participation, making learning not only effective but also enjoyable.
Additionally, I possess strong pedagogical skills and a broad academic background, allowing me to explain complex concepts in a simple and understandable way. I am flexible and easily adapt to different learning styles and levels, from beginners to advanced learners.

Thank you for your attention. I appreciate your time and hope to hear from potential students soon so that we can embark on this enriching journey of learning Dutch together!
