About Rebecca

I am an award-winning PhD with superlative teaching evaluations, excellent references, multiple publications in my field, and over 20 years' experience teaching language, literature and writing at the middle school through post-secondary levels. I have taught students from all backgrounds and have a unique ability to put students at ease, and build trust, rapport and connection to ignite their minds in a true love of learning.

If I can make college students look forward to an 8:00 a.m. required composition class, then just think of what I can inspire in you! I can't wait to meet my next students and help them with any aspect of English language learning they might need.

My language-teaching method focuses on practical communication for everyday life in business, study, travel or relocating to the English-speaking world. I am a PhD who is highly trained in up-to-date second-language acquisition, and I focus on empowering students to develop confidence and fluency as they polish their grammar and vocabulary.

If my student is not currently enrolled in an ESL program and has no assigned homework, my typical lesson plan begins with a "warm-up" that asks a fun, dynamic, culturally relevant question. I then continue with a casual conversation that reinforces language concepts learned in the previous lesson (and previous days or weeks), before moving on to a brief summary of a new language concept (with the aid of audiovisual materials for reinforcement and entertainment), followed by fun, dynamic targeted exercises that use that put the new concept to immediate use in everyday speech. My student and I then view a short, informative, fun video together on the subject matter of the student's choosing, before having a short interpretive conversation about the video's contents, before finishing with a short writing exercise (if the student wishes to strengthen written language) and a brief review quiz (possibly "gamified" with a program such as Kahoot if the student prefers to gamify learning), before finishing with another casual conversation that brings it all together.

What sets me apart as a tutor is that I bring a superlative level of pedagogical excellence and expertise to a 1:1 or small group setting and combine it with a uniquely dynamic, entertaining, informative, empathetic and personable delivery that makes my students look forward to my lessons as they learn faster than they ever have before.

I hope to work with language learners from middle-school age up through all stages of adulthood including older adults. I can help ESL students excel in formal ESL courses. prepare for all English language proficiency exams in any educational or professional setting, or just improve their English for everyday life. I look forward to working with you!
