About Claudia
My academic preparation in literature, culture, linguistics, and business has refined my skill sets as a Spanish instructor. On May 18, 2020, I completed a Spanish master’s degree with honors from CSUN. I also earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Autonoma del Caribe University in Barranquilla, Colombia, and just prior to my transfer to CSUN to begin my graduate program, I received an Associate Degree of Associate in Arts Spanish for Transfer from Antelope Valley College.
During the 2019-2020 academic year, I taught Spanish 101 as a Teaching Associate at CSUN, guiding undergraduate student learning of fundamentals in the Spanish language. Over the past year, I have been employed as an interpreter and translator for Tarzana Treatment Center Inc., rendering official documents from English to Spanish for agency provided behavioral, social and medical health-related services to local underserved populations within the greater Los Angeles area. Prior to this, I was an AVID tutor for Agents of Change at Cole Middle School, developing academic skills among seventh and eighth graders and preparing low-income, first-generation, historically underrepresented students for admission to higher education. I also worked at Antelope Valley College for four years, as a Spanish Tutor, Student Assistant at the Learning Center, working closely work with professors, students, and community members.
My passion to teach Spanish is fostered by my ability to empathize and connect with students, approachable to all those that need my assistance. With experience in the educational and financial sectors, I often motivate students by weaving language and cultural competencies through unique real-world and recreational activities. As a teacher, I model and motivate my students to creatively apply language skills learned in the classroom to a diversity of professional fields.

My goal is not only to emphasize the acquisition of code or linguistic forms; but also, in the teaching and knowledge of the community in which the target language is used. Therefore, my strategy is in reducing all the fears, insecurities, and frustrations that are present when deciding to learn a new language. All mistakes are welcome in my class and are used as learning opportunities. I focus on relevant aspects that create bridges between the student’s own culture, and that of the target language. This allows for an open attitude to develop which gives relevance to diversity, and thus my students understand the similarities and accept the differences between one culture and another.
Motivation plays a very important role in the learning process of any skill that we would like to acquire, and without question, it is essential in a classroom for both the teacher and the student. It is one of the strengths I bring into the classroom setting and a characteristic that I strive to instill in my students. I do this in multiple ways, from designing games to other interesting activities that are done with their classmates. My students learn by having fun, and through our creation of a favorable atmosphere in which learning is embraced. This is what I bring to the classroom and my students, every day. My class is also a place of safety and inclusion, of respect for everyone, and a philosophy of cultural humility; a valuing of everyone’s uniqueness and cultural differences. Inclusion is always present in my classes as an extension of the same inseparable concepts of language and culture. We cannot truly learn a language without also learning about the culture.
