My teaching methodology includes getting to know how the student best learns; whether it be visual, written, spoken, hands on, etc. A typical lesson plan is dependent on what the student needs to focus on. For example, if I am teaching a high school student how to write a proper essay, I break down its structure and try to get the individual involved as much as possible. This includes providing and explaining written examples that I have prepared in advance.
I will explain the introductory paragraph, how to craft a proper thesis, what the content of the different paragraphs should focus on, how to connect the ideas, how to write a conclusion, etc. I will ask the student to give me examples of what they think is best and give positive but constructive criticism as needed. I also ask what the student feels they need the most help with.
If I am teaching a kindergarten/elementary student how to read, I would provide a story for the child to start with and let them attempt to read and sound out words. Since phonetics is such a crucial aspect of learning, this would be a large area of focus. I have found visual examples and engaging the student with games is the best way to help them learn.
