About Brenden

Howdy! :)
I'm a Korean / Japanese / Mandarin / Cantonese teacher who's been teaching for about five years now.
My passion for languages started when I was a little 5 year old and accidentally turned our copy of "Super Smash Brothers Melee" into Japanese. I had no clue what was happening, and it really dawned on me that I couldn't understand a crumb of it while there are people who can.
When I was 13 I decided to finally take that leap and learn something new.
My brother lent me a book on Japanese grammar and since then I've been studying languages for almost a decade while teaching for half of one. Back in 2016 I got a job offer to teach Japanese. I've taught well over a hundred students in four different languages.

My passion for language has even led me to a lot of unexpected places, like moving to Busan for a while back in 2018. I taught English there, but mostly spent my time absorbing the culture, learning the language, and eating way too much food. If you're ever in Busan I HIGHLY suggest Honda Ramen in Jangsan. It's absolutely delicious.
While there I learned a lot through the general shenanigans of my daily life.
I learned about drinking culture, familial piety, and how to talk with elders just while drinking and singing karaoke with four university professors. The entire time they insisted I was Tom Cruise. I was not.
Every day and experience taught me something new.

Hello! :)
I'm actually self taught in all of the languages I've learned, using various books and the ️internet️
But I didn't have internet back when I started learning Japanese, about 13, living on a ranch. I only had a grammar reference book that wasn't in any specific order. I pretty much had to figure out how to learn a language in the middle of nowhere.
The way that I taught myself is how I teach my students- breaking something down to fully understand it and compounding on that understanding. I usually start with a basic 'to be' sentence because it can really tell you a LOT about how a language works.
Like in Japanese: I start with 'watashi no namae wa___ desu' - my name is __. Then we go through and break it down, teaching sentence order, differences between Japanese and English, formality, particles, and a lot more just from that one sentence alone. Pretty quickly you can start making your own sentences while fully understand what you're saying and why you're saying it.

I'm big into breaking something down so you not only know it but fully understand it. It's kind of like legos- once you get the pieces you can make whatever you want!

Pretty quickly you can make your own sentences out of understanding, not just out of memorizing stuff!

I also LOVE teaching about culture and history. The history of Japan, of Korea, of China, I teach about so many interweaving aspects of history and culture.

Want a lesson on the entire history of tea? Perfect.

Want a lesson on the culture and mythology of Animal Crossing? Perfect.

I teach about other Japanese languages, other Korean languages, North vs. South Korean, the history of Mandarin and Cantonese, how the writing systems came to be, and so much more.

You'll learn so much more than just a language- you'll learn culture, history, religion, philosophy, and so much more! My first unit is actually all about culture, history, and how the way we perceive the universe is tied directly to language, going deep into the philosophies of what a language even is and how perception can change with it. :D
