About Metiria

My father was also a teacher, teaching Māori kaupapa at schools and also prisons as a tutor. As children we would help him demonstrate specific maurākau actions and waiata/haka to his students of many different schools. At mainstream primary/intermediate: My Father was our Kapa Haka tutor for years (2004-2012) Performed at many cultural festivals and events within these years gaining experience. In my last year 2012 I won Kaitātaki wāhine best overall at the age of 10 (competed against intermediate and high school students also) At Kura Kaupapa: Our kapa haka group won Waitaha Secondary School Kapa Haka Regionals 2 years in a row (2015,2017) Also made it to Secondary School Kapa Haka Nationals 3 years in a row (2014,2016,2016) Throughout my whole schooling life I’ve picked up many skills from communicating and working with others to more cultural based skills like Māori performing arts and so much knowledge from Kura Kaupapa. I’d love to be able to share all my gifts of knowledge to our younger generations and anybody who wants to learn. Lastly I’d like to add that I don’t yet have all qualifications but also that’s why I’m reaching out to whoever sees this for an opportunity to help me take my taonga further. About the lesson

My skills include: Kōrero/Tuhinga Reo Māori, Waiata, Haka (Kapa Haka), Pūrākau, Maurākau and also some knowledge in Kaiāwhina/kaiako work from previous experience in a Kōhanga Reo setting (2018, age 17) I am 24 years old Māori with a passion for our culture. I grew up in mainstream and Kura kaupapa Māori so have a diverse set of skills. If you’re wanting to learn simple-medium Māori phrases and whakatauaki then I got you! For any music lovers, if there’s any waiata or haka you’d like to learn then I got you on that too! Anyone that loves action? I can help you learn some wicked maurākau moves too! Even if you’re more of a kick back person I’ve got Māori Pūrākau (Stories) to share while we relax kicking our feet up. My approach to teaching is flow-like. Whatever energy you all give me, I will give back ten-fold (with love and happiness) Love to have a laugh and letting people express themselves however they feel comfortable. I pride myself in adapting to many different personalities.
