About David

Welcome! I’m David, a professional trumpet player from Northern California. I grew up playing in the San Francisco Bay area, then moved across the country to study at The Juilliard School with Chris Martin, Principal Trumpet of the New York Philharmonic. I’m currently finishing my Master’s degree at Rice University in Houston, TX with renowned pedagogue Barbara Butler. As an orchestral player, I have performed with the Atlanta Symphony, San Diego Symphony, Nashville Symphony, North Carolina Symphony, and Sarasota Orchestra. As a chamber musician, I founded the Metropolis Brass Quintet while at Juilliard, a group that continues to perform in NYC today. I am also experienced on baroque trumpet, and have performed throughout the country with groups such as the American Bach Soloists and Arizona Bach Society.

I believe that playing a musical instrument is not only rewarding in itself, but can also lead us to learn how to live life more fully. The acts of discipline, attentive listening skills, risk taking, and individuality are things that I strive to bring out in my students. I have had to work on, explore, and discover many aspects to playing. Similarly, I bring that same curiosity and patience to teaching. I have taught both privately and given masterclasses to players of all ages and levels, and I strive to bring energy and personal attention to each of my students. I frequently work with students on everything from basic sound production to rhythm, intonation, range, endurance, jazz style, music theory, and orchestral playing. Learning to play and make music at any level is incredibly gratifying, and I would be happy to be a part of your musical journey.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

I distinctly remember my first time playing in Youth Orchestra and being amazed at what an incredible experience it is to be able to make music with a group people. I think like many trumpet players, I developed an appreciation for the role of our instrument through John Williams tracks such as Star Wars and Indiana Jones.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I never get tired of Bach. His music is on another level. That being said, there is so much to explore and learn from every single work of art, and I love listening to all genres and artists.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

I hold my students to the highest standards that we can create together. Learning mastery in any skill is a valuable experience, whether or not someone ends up playing professionally.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Every instrument has its challenges. For us as brass players, sound production is key. For pianists, it’s not an issue at all. For string players, intonation is extremely important. Mastering any instrument is a lifelong endeavor and I have a lot of respect for those who do it, no matter which instrument specifically.
  • What are your keys to success?

In general, I think perseverance and willingness to grow and change are key. In addition, having a sense of what success means to you- whether that comes from creating great art, collaborating with others, or learning to master an instrument,
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

My first choice would probably be Gottfried Reiche, who was Bach’s trumpet player. After that, Wynton Marsalis, who is a genius and able to speak in so many different ways through his horn. Third, the Beatles!
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

I always had a few plants in my apartment when in school. It was rewarding to see them slowly grow and change with the right amount of light, water, and fertilizer. It was often comforting to remember that no matter how that seating audition or orchestra rehearsal went, I would go back home to those same plants, unchanged. It was a humbling reminder that growth and change takes time, and to be patient.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

As a teacher, I tailor my lessons to my students’ goals and skills. I make lesson plans and an effort to think about strategies and assignments outside of lessons as well as being as engaging as possible during instruction. Finding a balance of intensity and fun is always worth striving for!
