About Michael

I love to teach.

I am a 35 years old German/American musician and music educator and I've played guitar and been writing songs half my life.

Studies:
- Jazz guitar (at the Institute of Music in Osnabrück, Germany.
- Music Education at the University of the Arts, Berlin, Germany.
('still need to write my thesis though ;))

Muscianship:
- I've released 2 EPs and wrote many more and I've played in various bands and projects.
- Swing, trad. New Orleans Jazz and Jazz Manouche have a special place in my heart and I have had some of the best times of my life playing this music for weddings, dance events or even just on the street!

Education:
- Apart from years of teaching experience in workshops, private music schools and private lessons I have turned my focus to the work, values and people of the Community Music education scene, which has opened my heart and mind for the possibilities of music as a means to bring people togther and as a tool for integration and community facilitation. (among other things, I've done workshops with Musicians Beyond Borders and worked as a community musician for the Dortmuns Concert Hall.)

About the lesson

Hi :)

My teaching methods stem from years of teaching experiences in various settings and learning from my masters:
- They are mostly intuitive, though I like to draw on Carl Orff's movement based methods for rhythm comprehenion.
- If it appears helpful and healthy I incorporate classical technique and music theory, but I consider these approaches optional. The capability to create and to make music is universal. (In the words of Rick Rubin: it is our birthright :) )
- My lesson structure is flexible and will be based on playing together as much as possible ( if the connection permits it) and your interests, skills and goals and how much time you have to play or practice in your everyday life.
- I am very groove and sound oriented.

What sets me apart as a tutor?
- I have a particular passion for the Jazz-Manouche-Guitar (also known as Sinti Swing)
- I am very attuned to and believe in the power of your individual ressources, musical or otherwise.
- I am just as passionate about Jazzguitar as I am about singing and songwriting.
- I've been tolled that I am very patient and motivating :)

Who are my lessons for?
- beginners, intermediates, advanced learners and anyone who is interested to travel deeper into the Jazz landscape or into the world of pop, rock, funk and soul music.
- Or, if you just want to learn a song for your sisters wedding, or whomever, I am also your guy. (ages 6- ??) (although teaching kids online who cannot read yet, can be very tricky)
