About Debra
I taught Freshman Literature and Composition at USC, ESL to adults, and I have been tutoring Pre-K, elementary, middle and high school students for a number of years. I have tutored students in English at all levels, in addition to social studies, history, science, math and Spanish. I have worked with students with learning disabilities or who are on the spectrum. I have also taught piano and flute privately to adults and kids. I have worked with a number of non-native college students, as well, and have assisted them with their graduate school, medical school and law school essays and applications and have been a writing "coach" for students of all ages. I have also researched and developed SAT and GRE practice test questions in ethics and English for Mometrix.
I have a B.A. in creative writing from USC, where I graduated summa cum laude and was awarded a fellowship for summer study at Cambridge University. Subsequently, I taught Freshman English at USC, where I was the Edward Moses Writing Fellow, and co-created and edited a faculty/ student literary magazine. Following my graduate work there, I got an MFA in Screenwriting from Columbia University, where I was awarded fellowships from the School of the Arts and Warner Bros. After I received my degree, I was awarded a fellowship from the Writers Guild of America, East Foundation.

My lessons are tailored to the specific needs, challenges, and goals of a particular student. I engage with my students, learn as much as I can about them and their interests,and pay close attention to techniques and assignments that work best for them. I am a motivator and work to inspire my students and encourage them to reach further than they think they can. I celebrate their efforts with the goal of helping them to feel pride in their own accomplishments.
