About Stephen

Dia dhuit! My name is Stephen and I'm an Irish Tutor from the South Kerry Gaeltacht. I am not a native speaker nor did I attend any gaelscoils! My Grá for Gaeilge didn't begin until 2nd year when my teacher at the time Jack O' Connor (Kerry Manager!!) pushed me to pursue Higher Irish. I fell in love with the teanga and have recently completed a Modern Languages degree in UL with a first class honours (in Irish and Spanish).

I have been an Irish student for most of my life however now I have gained 2 years of experience tutoring Gaeilge agus Béarla to people all around the world online. Therefore, I know the feeling of both sides and believe that I can offer essential insights into how I learnt my Gaeilge and pass it onto you!

About the lesson

Ar dtús, these lessons are for anyone looking to start from scratch, practice conversation at any level or to re-learn their Irish. I don't teach Gaeilge as grinds to students completing the Junior or Leaving Cert as i'm not a fan of memorising the language to pass the exam, I much prefer helping people understand the language and its wonderful usages.

A year ago, I met a retired man from Cork who said that he would love to re-learn the Irish he forgot after school and improve his conversational skills as Gaeilge. Seeing as he had the time, he decided to take lessons with me online each week and has consistently improved his confidence in the language that he feels deeply connected to. The education method of teaching Irish in the past has done a disservice to many, however there is now something you can do about it!

The Gaeilge revolution is in full flow, so whether you want to join in at beginner level or start using the vocabulary that you know in conversation, here is your place to start. Is é tús maith leath na hoibre - a good start is half the battle!

The typical length of a lesson is 1 hour depending on your requirements and level. Each lesson is tailored to you! We can focus more on the oral and spoken language, vocabulary, phrases or grammatical aspects (which will have you wanting to use the Modh Coinníollach instead of avoiding it). My lessons are a blend of English and Irish in order to work on fluency as well as to concentrate on accuracy. Go raibh maith agat :)
