About Reinis

I am a mathematics student at the University of St Andrews. Prior to this I have achieved awards at the International mathematics olympiad, International Philosophy olympiad and International Biology olympiad.
Performing at such a high level has made me develop efficient practices for learning and simplifying large amounts of complex information. These skills allow me to efficiently break down and explain complex topics to others.
To this end I have tutored about 10 high school students in the past 5 years in various subjects such as mathematics, chemistry, physics, computer science etc. These tutoring sessions have lead to better performance in tests, attainment of grades that necessary to qualify for top universities and perhaps most crucially a fundamental understanding of what it is that you are really being taught in the given subject.

About the lesson

I am currently in my penultimate year of a 4 year masters degree. I am therefore quite comfortable with tutoring high school to second year of university level mathematics.
Often mathematics is taught in a very dry and difficult manner, often obscuring the beautiful ideas and intuitive concepts behind it. Too many times have I heard people tell me that they used to be good in mathematics but then had a terrible maths teacher that ruined the joy of the subject for them. My approach is based on trying to explain and illustrate the mathematics in an engaging manner that will stick with the person.
My lessons usually focus on topics that are relevant to the student currently, i.e. things that are being taught in school, material of the exam etc. At first we go through some sample problems or questions to see what parts of the material my pupil has difficulty with. Afterwards I engage in discussion with the student trying to find what the key points of confusion are, as well as to see where they may be able to technically do the maths, but do not have a good intuitive idea of what is happening. During this I also explain all the questions as they come. After this process we engage in another series of questions and problems where I see if the student has understood and perhaps ask a more challenging question to really have them think about it.
As a tutor I am very methodical an thorough, I try to not only give my students the minimum necessary skills to get the grades they want, but to make them understand and think about the contents of their studies which often leads to them far exceeding the bar they have set for themselves.
