About Matt

I am an in-demand freelance double bass and bass guitarist specialising in jazz. I graduated from Trinity Laban Conservatoire with a BMus in Jazz Double Bass in 2005 and have been performing and teaching since then. I am also hugely enthusiastic about classical double bass, and I hold a Licentiate Diploma from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

I have performed hundreds of gigs over the past 15 years, with many of the UK's best known jazz musicians and at the most famous venues, including The Barbican, Ronnie Scott's, Cadogan Hall, live on BBC Radio 3 'In Tune', Dean St. Pizza Express, The Rich Mix, and at jazz festivals across the country including the London Jazz Festival, Scarborough, Swanage, Marlborough, Swansea. I have also toured extensively in other countries including Russia, South Africa, Israel, Iceland, Sicily and numerous other European countries with the Darius Brubeck Quartet.

I also lead my own band, with which I have released 2 albums of original compositions, had radio play on BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 2, Jazz FM and performed at jazz clubs and festivals around the UK.

I love teaching! I am genuinely enthusiastic about all aspects of bass playing and I find helping people of all levels and abilities extremely rewarding. I have helped students tackle grade exams, both ABRSM and Rockschool, and I have also helped students with preparation for conservatoire audition.

I am 'Peripatetic Jazz Specialist' at the Brentwood School in Essex, where I teach improvisation 1-2-1 to all instruments, ages 12-18, and I coach ensembles of senior and junior jazz.

I have coached two jazz double bass students through Masters auditions (Royal Academy of Music and Trinity Laban Conservatoire), both of whom were successful and won entrance scholarships.

I love teaching! I teach bass guitar and jazz double bass from beginner level up to professional performer standard. Quite a few of my students are adult beginners, so no matter what playing level you're at, don't hesitate to get in touch.

I can also teach music theory, and I'm happy to advise on composition and arranging.

With all instruments, I am careful to give proper consideration to technique and sound production. I am very conscious to make this fun and enjoyable, and I like to take this on to emulating the players and styles which you find inspiring, as soon as possible! For jazz bass and bass guitar, we will look at famous players and recordings, and look at transcriptions and use them as study materials.

I am very enthusiastic about classical double bass, and I enjoy working from books which have a piano accompaniment, so that I can play with you, and give you the experience of making music with another human being in our lessons. I am familiar with the ABRSM grade exams and encourage working towards these where appropriate.

I am a fluent user of 'Sibelius', the score writing program, and I frequently use this to create worksheets or musical examples for my students.

I teach from home, where I have a piano, bass amplifier, computer and printer so that all relevant study materials are on-hand!
