About Alexander

I am a highly experienced A level and GCSE English specialist tutor who currently teaches at MPW (Mander Portman Woodward), South Kensington. I also tutor privately for four leading London agencies: Gabbitas, British Home Tutors, Owl Tutors and My Tutor Club and am a Member of the Tutors' Association. Previously, I have taught at three 'Beacon Status' sixth-form colleges all of which have been rated 'outstanding' by OFSTED: Hills Road Sixth Form College, Cambridge; the Sixth Form College, Farnborough; and Esher College, where I was the Head of English leading a highly successful English department consisting of 11 teachers and 770 A Level English students between 2008-2012. I have examined for the AQA and OCR; I am pursuing a book project for Palgrave-Macmillan on the influential writer, J. G. Ballard; I wrote the York Notes on 'Frankenstein' for the GCSE series and am an active Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts as well as a member of both the London Library, the British Library and the Society of Authors. My students find me enthusiastic, supportive, cordial and professional. I am responsive, a good listener, able to make complex ideas accessible and exciting, and can balance exploratory, individualised and structured approaches to learning. I believe in drawing from a wide range of teaching methods to make a student's experience of English varied, fresh and challenging but also identifying the particular needs of each individual to ensure that the right skills are prioritised and tackled rigorously. Many students appreciate having a clear direction to learning and I believe in signposting different areas in a focused way - whether the skills involve close reading, constructing a debate, understanding or applying theory, researching contexts, or working on essay techniques and planning past papers. My tutees over the last six years have valued my commitment to aiding their studies and wider cultural development, and parents have often thanked me for my willingness to 'go the extra mile' for their sons and daughters. (In many cases I have 'added value' of two grades or more over the course of regular tuition and always one grade at the least.) Einstein once said of himself 'I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.' Ultimately, I believe that curiosity is the key to being both successful in exams and developing a life-long love of learning. Perfect! Look no further - amazing tutor
Alexander is an amazing tutor, don’t hesitate to use him. He has worked so hard with my daughter for 3 weeks for her English A level retake this October. He really knows the texts, is obviously a very experienced teacher and has really invested his time in helping her, taking the job very seriously. Before her first lesson he wanted to see past essays she had written and chatted to her on the phone so that he could work out where she needed help before the lessons started. He then worked out a plan for the 3 weeks, making sure every book was covered and giving her a structure to work to. Each lesson was planned meticulously and information emailed to her before the lesson. My daughter said she has learnt more in these 3 weeks than she did in 2 years at school. His feedback on her essays she has written for him are outstanding, and within 3 weeks she has gone from writing B/C standard essays to A standard ones. All of her lessons were on line. I couldn’t recommend him more.
