Find out more about Aayush

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I am a FIDE-rated chess player which encouraged me to teach advanced chess to people. After recognizing the lack of tutors in Punjabi and Hindi languages in Malaysia, I decided to take a step to support the languages. I am a graduate from Biotechnology which pushed me to teach the subject. I qualified IELTS with 7.5 Bands helping me teach students the language of English.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach Hindi, Punjabi, English as well as coach students for chess. I also teach Biotechnology which is my major. I like to discuss topics not just about the subjects I teach but also philosophy and also try to guide them for a better future.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher who inspired you?

I don't have any role models but I do believe life teaches you a lot. I remember a teacher praising me in my childhood for my good handwriting which taught me how acknowledgement can change the way you think about yourself.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

The biggest quality required is to NOT be boring. Students often complain about subjects like Maths, Physics or maybe accounts, psychology being boring subjects. But the reality is that a bad teacher ruins the fun in those subjects.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

An anecdote that I can remember about my school days, is when I fell asleep in a civics class. I was punished for being sleepy yet I scored full marks in the subject. The teacher was quite shocked and blamed for cheating. But it was due to the fact that even though the teacher was boring, I had YT which made my learning fun.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Pushing my chess elo has now even become more difficult with the rise of chess in recent years (esp. COVID lockdown).
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Research is my passion, and teaching is the side-product of it. Researchers are deemed to be unexpressive (which is not true btw) and often boring. But I like explaining things in the simplest of manner to the layman, further fueling my passion for research.
  • What makes you a Superprof?

It's the fact that I don't give up on my students. I try to help them, give them the simplest of answers, and be available for them 24/7 (except when I'm sleeping).
