About James

I am currently in the third year of a History PhD focusing on the political, social, and cultural worlds of the early years of the USA, c. 1789-1830s. I have a BA and MA in History from the University of Cambridge where I achieved a First Class mark in Part 1 and a 2.1 in Part 2, specialising in Ancient History (primarily the Roman Republic and early Roman Empire) and Early Modern History, in particular the "long eighteenth century" and the Atlantic World. I also have an MA in History from the University of Liverpool, for which I was awarded a Distinction.

In my three years as an undergraduate I was required to produce a weekly full-length essay on a topic about which often I had no previous knowledge. This academic structure engendered a meticulous discipline in terms of time management, research skills, analytical ability to understand the material and a proficiency in synthesising and articulating my findings in a clear and exact manner. It also introduced me to the rigours of academic debate, and the need to both defend one's own point of view while listening to and considering those of others.

Additionally in my leisure time I have gained extensive experience teaching theatre and drama, theory and practice, to a wide range of age groups and skills.

About the lesson

History is one of the most enjoyable, fulfilling subjects you can study, and I employ a positive, upbeat approach to lessons. No matter your previous experience, I believe with a little guidance exam success is within the reach of anybody. I teach rigorous academic standards in a way that makes them accessible to all.

My lessons are typically of one hour's duration, but this is flexible depending on the needs of each individual student. Each session will centre on work you will produce, using your answers and essays as a starting point to increase your understanding of the topics and improving your analytical skills. Using those starting points, we will explore both primary and secondary sources and improve both your knowledge base and your approach to skill sets needed to do well in exams.

I am happy to teach students taking GCSEs and A-Levels and also those at undergraduate level at university.
