About Matthew
With over 13 years of experience tutoring, teaching college, and facilitating learning at museums, Dr. Matthew Amyx has learned how to approach subjects from a variety of angles to help students with diverse backgrounds and learning styles. He likes to keep lessons fun and humorous when possible while still staying focused on results. While he teaches all parts of the American and World History surveys, his research focus is America during the Progressive Era and Great Depression.

For ACT/SAT prep, I mix instruction in the basics with short, guided practice. (I do not use tutoring time to proctor full exam practice, which I believe is a waste of the parents' money. Students instead do long sections as homework that we review during sessions.) While I do "teach to the test" in the sense that I provide tips and tricks for the exams, I also use the lessons as general college academic preparation as well. Lessons are usually about half lecture, half-guided practice.
I am highly skilled at the English, reading, and science sections of the PSAT/SAT/ACT. (I am okay at the math, and I can help with the math as part of a general program, but I would recommend you pick a more math-specialized tutor if math is the student's main issue.)
For AP and college history tutoring, I have a full range of lectures and slides for all major subjects in both halves of the American and World History/Western Civilization surveys. I can tailor the program for a wide variety of students needs, including exam prep, essay help, research advice, and primary source analysis. Lesson plans will depend heavily on the student's specific needs but will include a combination of lecture and short writing practice.
