I am a high school senior with a cumulative 4.66 GPA and a 1490 on the SAT. I have tutored both peers and underclassmen to getting scores on tests higher than they have ever gotten or thought they could get.

I would start by giving them a couple of simple problems from the current material they are learning, and steadily progress onto harder sections of that area. After assessing what parts of the unit they are struggling most with, I will walk them through how to do the problems they got wrong. To better teach the method of the problem, I will do a 'trial by fire' first, then increasingly add help as needed until the student has the concept down.
