About Carlos
I wanted to pay forward what I had learned from my own teachers to the next generation; this was the driving force behind why I wanted to teach. I graduated from Seton Hall University in 2018 with degrees in secondary education and English. I have been teaching in a high-performing school district in New Jersey since 2018, so over the years I have learned that effective teaching requires a genuine and personal touch. Teaching through COVID taught me that students bring their own experiences and backgrounds to the classroom and that has to be honored. As a veteran teacher now, I strongly believe that building a personal connection is the way that learning happens; it is very hard to learn from someone who doesn't believe that you can succeed. I believe that anyone who learns from me has the capacity to succeed and grow beyond what others say or even they themselves believe.

My teaching philosophy is driven by belief in discussion and written expression. For any language arts level, we'll start with the student's interests, find a text related to that, and have a discussion about how the text functions. From there, we will practice writing and work on the cognitive skills needed to consistently deliver a strong piece of writing that features multiple pieces of evidence. These are foundational skills that apply from the 5th grade all the way through the university level.
My style is different in that I will put your needs first instead of trying to reach a predetermined outcome that may or may not fit what you need at the moment.
