About Kerry

Who am I? I am the student who nearly gave up A Level Economics in her first term because it wasn’t ‘clicking’. I am the student who went to a struggling state school and largely taught herself into Oxford (with huge thanks to my exceptional history teacher who made all the difference across all my subjects). I am the student who didn’t take A Level maths but still went on do a PhD in applied microeconometrics. I am a person who consistently turns it around against the odds, and I can help you do that too if that is where you are at right now. Beyond that, I am a person who has been surprised and delighted by the opportunities and satisfaction that Economics has brought me in my career to date. From working on the issue of marginal pricing of emergency admissions in hospitals (when at Monitor, now NHS Improvement), to taking a leading role in allocating £50bn of NHS spend in a 5 year allocation process (at Deloitte), to analysing the scope for pricing to manage UK water demand (for my PhD), I have learnt how to take my technical knowledge of Economics and use it to shape the world in which we live. You come to this subject at a pivotal and exciting time. The need for us to appropriately and sustainably allocate our finite resources has never been more critical than it is today, facing seemingly competing issues like climate change and a cost of living crisis. While I have enjoyed working at the ‘coal face’ of such issues for many years, I now want to focus on equipping you as the next generation of Economists, from A Levels onwards. I am here to give you as much or as little support as you need, at all stages of your career. My aim is to get to know you really well so that I can help you over the long not just short run, if that is what you would like. When we first work together I will help you understand Economics and achieve academic success. Beyond that, I can help you understand yourself and support you to make the best choices, for you, of the many professional opportunities that come your way. Economics is a vibrant and purposeful subject and once I ‘cracked it’, my enthusiasm for it has only ever grown, not waned. I hope that enthusiasm and my academic and professional experience will inspire and motivate you, especially on the days when you can’t make sense of the material or just feel like giving up.

I like to tutor on both a technical and a psychological level. This means that while the focus of our sessions is primarily on economics content, I will support you to be aware of the thoughts and emotions you bring to your work, so that you can manage the pressures you face and increase in confidence and success across all your subjects, not just Economics. Equipping you to bring your mental ‘A game’ as well as your technical ‘A game’ is more than a study and exam skill, it’s the foundation of a successful career, whether that be as an Economist or something else. When I tutor I build up a student-specific understanding of how you can most easily assimilate what you need to know. This might mean using analogies and explanations that make the subject accessible by drawing on your hobbies or interests, utilising language that I know is instinctive for you, or knowing how much to unpack any given concept so that you acquire an ‘inside-out’ knowledge of the subject. The focus of my career to date has been as a professional applied Economist, but my gift for explaining Economics has been recognised by both my clients and teaching staff. For example, one client commented on my ‘consummate ability to communicate the most complex analytical issues in a manner which is both comprehensible and engaging for an audience of non-experts’. And even during my degree, my Economics tutor at Oxford asked me to privately tutor three students who were struggling with their economics (all of whom received a degree class higher than they had been predicted). I typically teach in hour slots remotely and focus on A-Level and undergraduate Economics.
