About Ailsa

When students come to me, they may have many reasons for seeking help with their studies. I am interested in them, their aspirations, their worries, their hopes and ambitions, and I will work hard to help them become all they can be. I am always willing to listen to their concerns and ideas, and to adapt my teaching to their current needs. Although many students are a little nervous and unsure when first having lessons, with me they quickly develop confidence and look forward to their learning. Lessons are pitched at the right level to ensure progress without being daunting to those who may be struggling. For those who are seeking extra challenge in their maths studies, I provide appropriate materials to take them beyond the school curriculum for their year. I monitor progress in order to inform my teaching. This also allows me to give helpful feedback to both parents and students. I am available by phone or email between lessons and often give help and advice if a piece of schoolwork is causing difficulties.

About the lesson

Every student is unique and so my lessons are tailored to that student as a result of an initial assessment plus ongoing monitoring of progress. One to one lessons can be intense, therefore I do my best to keep them light with a little humour where appropriate. Nevertheless, I expect high standards of all my students; whatever their current level of achievement, I anticipate that they will give their best effort at all times. Lessons are followed by homework designed to reinforce what has been taught. Most lessons are one hour in duration. For younger children or those with special needs, a shorter period may be more appropriate. For those preparing for GCSE exams, 90 minute lessons are a possibility. I have 40+ years of experience as a tutor and have a track record of turning potential failure into resounding success. I have a BSc in Mathematical Studies; Postgraduate Certificate in Primary Education with distinction; Advanced Diploma in Primary Education. Lessons are available for students from age 5 to GCSE level. I am able to help all abilities, including students with Special Educational Needs such as autism, ADHD, global delayed development, Down Syndrome and so on.

Pricing per hour depends on the age of the student. Online and in person rates are the same. KS1 and KS2: £30 per hour KS3 and KS4: £35 per hour
