About Basil

Math has always been the subject where I felt most at home, not because it came easily, but because I learned to enjoy the process of figuring out why something works. That mindset has stuck with me throughout my education and career, and it's the same mindset I bring to every session with a student.

Years of formal training in analytical thinking taught me to break complex problems into manageable pieces and communicate technical ideas clearly, no matter someone's starting comfort level with the material. A student's confusion is just another problem to diagnose, and I'm genuinely energized by finding the explanation or representation that finally makes a concept click.

I started tutoring because I remember what it felt like to be stuck on a concept, and I remember how much of a difference it made to have someone patiently walk through the reasoning with me instead of just handing me the steps. I try to be that person for my students: patient, encouraging, and genuinely invested in their understanding, not just their grade on Friday's quiz.

Outside of tutoring, I bring the same structured, detail-oriented approach from my analytical background into how I plan lessons. Every session has a purpose, whether that's shoring up a shaky foundation, prepping for a specific test, or pushing a student who's ready for a deeper challenge.

My goal for every student is simple: leave each session not just with the right answer, but with the confidence and reasoning skills to get there on their own next time.

About the lesson

High School Math Tutoring That Builds Understanding, Not only Memorization

I believe students learn math best when they understand why something works; not simply which formula or procedure to memorize.

With a B.S. in Mathematics & Computer Science and an MS in Computer Information Systems, I bring a strong mathematical foundation along with years of experience analyzing problems, breaking complex concepts into manageable pieces, and finding practical ways to explain them.

My Approach:
I don't simply give students the answer or demonstrate a procedure for them to copy. I work with students to identify where their understanding breaks down and why.

When a student makes a mistake, we use that mistake as a learning opportunity. Is it a conceptual misunderstanding? A procedural error? A calculation mistake? Or perhaps they know the material but are applying the wrong method?

Once we identify the issue, I guide the student toward understanding the underlying concept and developing the ability to solve similar problems independently.

I also use multiple representations: equations, graphs, tables, diagrams, and real-world examples, because sometimes seeing a concept differently is what makes it click.

What a Typical Lesson Looks Like:
• Briefly review what the student is currently learning and identify areas of difficulty.
• Work through problems together while I ask questions to understand the student's reasoning.
• Identify and address misconceptions rather than simply correcting answers.
• Connect the current topic to concepts the student already knows.
• Practice with progressively more challenging problems.
• Finish by checking whether the student can explain the concept and apply it independently.

The goal isn't just to get today's homework finished. It's to leave the student better equipped to solve tomorrow's problems.

Why Choose Me?
My background is somewhat different from that of a typical math tutor. My formal college education provides me a combination of mathematical knowledge and analytical problem-solving skills.

I approach mathematics as something to understand and reason through, rather than a collection of formulas to memorize.

I also believe that students' mistakes are valuable clues. Instead of immediately telling a student what they did wrong, I use questions to help them examine their own reasoning and discover where it went off track. This helps build not only mathematical knowledge, but also confidence, critical thinking, and independent problem-solving skills.
