About Joey

I am a freshman in high school with a 4.3 GPA. I have a history with tutoring kids at my school, both around my age and younger than me, to great success with tests and class work. I love to help people with this great gift I’ve been blessed with, and this is a good way to give back.

As a student myself with many friends with learning disabilities and/or special needs who need special accommodations, I know it can be very difficult to generalize how everyone learns. For this reason, I approach each topic from a personal standpoint. What I mean by this is I love to hear a student explain to me in their own words everything they already know about the topic, and we build and shape lesson plans and focal points based on what they struggled with. I love using memory recall games (typically flashcards) and spaced repetition to help terms and facts stick better in their heads. I do not like to overwhelm a student, so oftentimes we stick to one or two key points until they have mastered them before we move on to the next key point(s).

My methods, however, differ from student to student. Depending on the style of learning the student prefers, we can do more physical writing, just talk together, or maybe even begin projects and assigning homework. It all depends on the student’s willingness to learn. I am a firm believer in mindsets, and if you want to learn, I want to teach you.

I will never let a student drown themselves. If I ask a question they may not know the answer to, it is my goal to help them to the answer. I refuse to leave a student hanging on a ledge. I know how embarrassing that can be, and I will never ever make anyone feel uncomfortable or humiliated for not knowing an answer. I will guide you through it gently, without patronization. This, from my past experiences, is something that makes kids more comfortable with asking questions, helping them learn better in a classroom setting.
