About Jas
Coming from an Indonesian-American background with many family members who speak English as a second language, I have always admired English language learners. Despite being born and raised in the US, even I have had moments where I felt my English was incompetent in comparison to monolingual English speakers. While it might seem that being semi-bilingual retracts from my skills as an English tutor, I believe that my language diversity actually makes me a better tutor. It allows me to be more patient and understanding of my students, because I know how hard they are trying.
When I first started working as an English tutor, it was a simple part-time job I had while obtaining my Associate degree. However, when I began working with ESL students, I grew to genuinely love being a tutor. With all my students, I felt there was a great sense of connection and relatability. I found that helping students gain confidence in their English skills is what I’m meant to do in my life through this job as a tutor. From there, I set plans to obtain a Bachelor’s in Linguistics so I could better equip myself in assisting second language learners.

I’ve worked with International students from Cambodia, Japan, Azerbaijan, Korea, and Mexico. During tutor sessions, I do my best to help my students improve their regular English and Academic English. This can be related to grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, speaking, listening, reading, and so on. Additionally, I help students brainstorm ideas for written assignments, as well as proof read and give feedback on papers.
Lessons can be structured, but if that seems like too much pressure we can keep it casual. Ultimately, I wish for my students to feel confident in their English.
