About Sienna

My name is Sienna Black and I recently graduated the Univeristy of Cambridge with a first-class honours degree in English. I am therefore passionate and dedicated to this subject and hope to get you as excited about it as I am! Lessons will focus on active, rather than passive, learning techniques such as; practise excersises; walking through exam papers; discussing and annotating texts you are working on in real time; and learning how to research contexts and 'read around' the subject for a richer understanding. I empathise with how stressful GCSEs and A Levels are, but I hope this practical approach will help ease these worries and build your confidence with voicing and expanding your ideas. Lessons being online will also hopefully allow for greater flexibility around your busy schedules. No matter what level you are aiming for, I will take your aspirations seriously and work with you to try and attain them!

About the lesson

I believe in tailoring lessons to the learner - so will begin with talking to you about whether you are a visual, auditory or kinesthetic learner and proceed from there accordingly with how I teach you. A typical lesson lasts an hour, which will begin by going over essays you may have written and want feedback on, so you can start moving toward the grades you are aiming for. The reasons peope seek out tutoring are varied, and so the bulk of the session will focus on your specific needs. This may include any questions you have about the set texts you are studying, going through questions in real time, working through creative excersises (for English Language papers), looking at contextual material, etc. Regardless of the questions you come to the session with however, I can assure you that there will always be a dedicated portion of time assigned to textual material, as studying English is inherently discursive and conversations about what you are studying will help enrich your understanding, develop your analytical skills, and hopefully build your confidence with expressing your ideas! This may be a fifteen to twenty minute discussion or debate around the thematics of text, or perhaps looking at an unseen passage in preparation for this portion of your examinations.

As a recent graduate, and someone still in further education as I complete my Creative Writing MA, I have recently been through GCSEs and A Levels so still have a clear understanding of grading, mark schemes, and what an examiner is looking for in your work. As well as this, I can offer reading lists and resources for you if you are a student hoping to take this subject further to degree level, or trying to build your UCAS personal statement.
