About Mariko

My name is Mariko Amano van Baaren. I’m half Japanese and half Dutch, and grew up speaking Japanese with my mother. As a child, I attended Japanese Saturday school to stay connected to the language. Although I was raised mainly in the Netherlands, I also spent several years living in Tokyo, where I worked as a TV talent and model in the Japanese entertainment industry. I love staying connected to my cultural roots through food, language, and Japanese cinema. I enjoy sharing that passion with my students.

About the lesson

I have a passion for languages and love exploring different cultures through the way people speak and express themselves. With around five years of teaching experience in Japanese, Dutch, and English. I have primarily work with young adults 1 to 1. My teaching style is playful and interactive, I focus on helping students build an ever-expanding network of words through associative learning, especially when it comes to speaking. For beginners in Japanese, I start with reading and writing hiragana and katakana, introducing simple words and phrases along the way. If you are thinking of taking a JLPT exam I can support with prepping with that as well!
