About Russ
I’m a guitarist and songwriter living in East Texas with more than 20 years of experience. I’ve spent that time playing, writing, arranging, improvising, learning songs by ear, and studying theory, harmony, and the fretboard across Americana, folk, blues, jazz, soul, indie, and rock. I also have a background in education, with experience teaching at the high school, college, and adult-learning levels, so I’m comfortable breaking down difficult ideas and adapting lessons to different ways of learning.
For beginners, I can help build a solid foundation with chords, rhythm, picking, basic theory, and learning complete songs. For intermediate players, I focus more on helping you understand what you’re hearing, connect theory to the fretboard, improve your ear, develop your phrasing, and become more confident figuring things out for yourself.
My goal is to meet you where you are and teach in a way that stays connected to the music you actually want to play.

My teaching approach is 100% informed by the music you like and want to play. For beginners, this may be learning the chords and rhythms for your favorite songs. For intermediate players, my goal is to help you move beyond shapes by understanding what you’re hearing, why it works, and how to use that knowledge to become a more independent player.
