What Sets Me Apart I’m a tech, not just a teacher. I’ll teach you to set up and maintain your instrument so it’s actually fun to play. Most students don’t realize their struggle isn’t their fault - it’s their setup. I teach you to fish. You’ll learn to hear what’s happening in music, figure out songs by ear, and keep your instrument maintained. Independence is the goal. Theory becomes a tool, not homework. When you discover the circle of fifths actually helps you write and learn songs faster, you’ll want to understand it.

My Approach as a Guitar Instructor

Teaching Philosophy & Method

I believe the best way to learn music is by playing music you actually want to play. My job isn’t to drill theory into you - it’s to help you make the sounds you’re hearing in your head come out through your instrument.

With over 30 years of experience on guitar, bass, and ukulele, I focus on three things:

Understanding, not memorizing.

Using the CAGED system, I help you see how the fretboard actually works - so you’re not stuck playing in one position or lost when you need to move up the neck. You’ll learn intervals and how they feel, which builds real ear training and musical intuition.

Keeping it playable and fun.

As a guitar tech, I know that most beginners quit because their instrument fights them. High action, bad intonation, dead strings - these kill motivation. I’ll make sure your gear is set up properly so playing feels easy and inspiring, not frustrating.

Learning theory without realizing it.

You’ll learn songs, techniques, and sounds you love. Along the way, you’re absorbing theory naturally. One day I’ll point out “Hey, you know music theory now” - and suddenly tools like the circle of fifths become incredibly useful for figuring out songs, writing your own music, and understanding why certain progressions work.

A Typical Lesson
We start with what you want to play - a song, a style, a technique you’ve been trying to figure out.
We work on it together, and I sneak in the concepts you need along the way: chord shapes that connect across the neck, how to hear and create tension and release, rhythm patterns that groove.
If your guitar isn’t cooperating, we fix it. If something isn’t clicking, we approach it differently until it does.
By the end, you’re not just playing - you’re understanding why it works and how to use it elsewhere.
