About Alex
After having spent the past three years in Paris, I have recently moved back to Northern Virginia to start my new chapter. I work as a communications advisor for a gender equity NGO and am currently becoming TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) certified so I can move to South America this winter/fall. I have extensive experience working with kids both as an English nanny in Paris, a sailing counsellor, an English tutor, and a history TA for my university.
As someone who is very curious and loves to learn, I am reading about new subjects and exploring new places in the world. I love to learn new languages as I find there is no process more humbling. Currently I am learning Spanish, but I am always looking for ways to expand my French. I feel that as a teacher I have just as much to learn from my students as they should learn from me. I am someone who works hard while always remaining humble and patient. I bring energy and optimism into everything I do and will always try to bring my best with every lesson :) After having studied and embarrassing myself in front of Parisians for years, I can say confidently that I speak French and understand the difficult but rewarding process it takes to get to fluency. I believe that everyone can get there!

I studied French in high school here in the US as an IB student. It was not until I moved to France that I really felt I could speak French. I am familiar with how languages are taught here in the US, but I believe that are not as efficient as they could be. This is why my lessons would focus on speaking and fluency rather than writing and grammar as I believe these are the most important aspects to learning a language (and are not focuses in public schools).
My lessons will be entered around the student's needs: what are they studying in school, where do they feel they are confident or not confident in, and why do they want to learn the language. For students who are in high school or middle school, we would start by reviewing their homework, tests, and quizzes to see where they need help in. Based on this I will formulate short grammar and vocabulary practice (flashcards, written practice, games). Each lesson will always feature conversation, at least 15 minutes (can be more depending on the student).Throughout the conversation, I will note things that we need to practice on regarding speaking (sentence structure, verb tense, more complex vocabulary). I believe it is important to incorporate culture into language learning, so I would have students find songs, musicians, films, sports, etc. that interest them so we can discuss them as well.
