About Bryan
I used to work for a technology consulting and training company, and the classes we taught usually led to certification in a technical field. The company's motto was "get more than certified, get qualified". For job seekers, this meant learning beyond what was needed to pass a test and having the skills to not only get a job, but keep it and excel in it. For current job holders, this meant improving their performance in their existing jobs, or learning what was needed to seek promotion to a higher level. I apply this same principle to my teaching of History and ESL. Most of us have heard the expression "Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it". My goal as a History instructor is to help my students go beyond learning facts and figures, to gain understanding of the meaning of events of the past, how they may have led to the present, and what needs to be learned to avoid past mistakes in the future. For ESL, my goal is to help students go beyond correct speech and to learn the nuances of English, to understand how words may be defined by culture or region, and to be successful in whatever endeavors the learning of English allows them to do.

My overall teaching method is to work alongside my students as a mentor and team member. I have always felt that I am successful when my students are meeting their goals.
Lesson plans generally consist of multiple elements. For ESL, for example, an individual lesson will contain new vocabulary words, and at least two grammar points. Learning is enabled through activities that include reading, writing, speaking, and some physical activity.
My experience working with special needs students has enabled me to have a deeper appreciation of learning differences and challenged me to find creative ways to meet them.
My History lessons are targeted for high school AP level students, undergraduate or graduate students. ESL lessons are tailored to the student who needs them, regardless of age.
