About Helena

I have experience teaching in adult education and undergraduate settings. For adult education, I taught introductory psychology in adult learning classes in Hong Kong. For undergraduate settings, I am currently Lecturer at the University of Tasmania, responsible for courses including Psychology B, Research Methods II, and Lifespan Developmental Psychology. I was Lecturer at the Australian Catholic University, responsible for courses including Applied Psychology, and Statistics and Research Methods for the first-, third-, and fourth-year undergraduate students. I was the module leader of Introduction to Research Methods, Lifespan Development and Personality, Developmental Psychology, and Personality and Individual Differences at the University of Bradford. I also co-taught Adult Development and Aging for college juniors and seniors at Colorado State University in Fall 2008. In my teaching experience, I realize I have learned as much as I have given, if not more. First of all, I have learned about my own strengths and weaknesses as a teacher. I take students’ evaluations seriously to understand their needs and to enhance my teaching skills. Student evaluations inform me that they like how I incorporate personal stories and YouTube videos in lectures. In contrast, students’ questions alert me to the times when I do not explain important concepts clearly. Trying to explain important concepts helps me realize what I do not know so well about the material. This realization keeps me engaged with my research ideas, and critical thinking and rethinking of the definitions of concepts frequently used in my field. Instead of the commonly perceived roles of teacher and student in a classroom, I believe learning takes place when teachers and students are engaged in both giving and taking. Using Paulo Freire’s concepts, the basic roles of classroom participation are the teacher-student and the student-teacher. That is, a teacher who learns and a student who teaches.

My philosophy of research-led education draws heavily from Abraham Maslow’s idea of self-actualization and Paulo Freire’s criticism to the student-teacher dichotomy. I have two objectives as a teacher. First, I believe through education, students realize what they enjoy doing in life and who they want to become. A teacher should take the role of a mentor and lead students to develop their potentials and achieve their dreams. Second, I believe learning occurs when both teachers and students actively engage in the learning process, such that teachers and students both give and receive knowledge and skills.
