About Syd

Hello! I am a graduate student at Iowa State University with a concentration in sustainable agriculture and rural community health. My academic and professional work has shaped a strong passion for helping students feel engaged and confident in their learning. Through teaching, guest lectures, and community-based work, I’ve seen how powerful it can be when complex ideas are explained in clear, relatable ways. I bring that same approach into tutoring by meeting students where they are, encouraging questions, and creating a supportive, low-pressure environment. My goal is not only to help students succeed academically, but also to help them feel more comfortable and capable of navigating challenging material on their own.

My professional work sits at the intersection of public health, environmental sociology, and spatial analysis, focusing on how structural and environmental conditions shape health outcomes in rural and underserved communities.

I am actively involved in interdisciplinary research projects that combine qualitative methods, survey research, and geospatial analysis. My current work includes community-based water quality perception studies across Iowa, as well as an international “One Health” project in eastern Uganda examining cocoa production, malaria risk, and nature-based solutions. I have extensive experience using ArcGIS Pro, Tableau, and R to develop interactive dashboards and spatial models that translate complex environmental and health data for academic, policy, and community audiences.

In addition to my research, I am deeply committed to public scholarship and community engagement. I regularly facilitate focus groups and listening sessions, collaborate with community partners, and prioritize making scientific findings accessible and meaningful to non-academic audiences. I also have undergraduate-level teaching experience, including guest lectures on cultural capital, environmental health, and community dynamics.

Following my graduation in May, I will pursue a PhD in public health with a focus on community and environmental health, aiming to produce applied, equity-centered research that informs policy and strengthens rural health systems.

I start by identifying each student’s goals, learning style, and areas of difficulty, then tailor lessons accordingly. Sessions are tailored to meet your student where they are. I emphasize real-world examples and step-by-step problem solving so concepts feel approachable rather than overwhelming. What sets me apart is my background in research and teaching, which allows me to break down complex material into accessible language while helping students think critically and independently. I tutor students of all ages and skill levels, because everyone deserves a positive learning experience.
