I have been tutoring privately for about 3 years now, from grades 8 to 12. My students usually begin with little to no fundamental understanding, and end up with not only a passing grade, but sometimes a higher than average grade.

First and foremost, I am myself a visual learner, and as a result I try to teach in the same way. I also strive to make lessons entertaining or interesting.
I believe one of the best learning methods is friendly debate; it helps to identify some weak spots and gives me something to work with. I personally find that arguing on a topic hones my own understanding, even if I'm wrong.
I am very flexible on lesson structure. Typically I like to work through past exam papers or assessements if they are available.
